The Pros Of Freelancing
Written by admin on August 11th, 2009So what are the advantages of freelancing? There are quite a few of them. It sure beats working for a boss. So let’s get to them.
Make Your Own Hours
This is probably the biggest advantage to freelancing. When you’re working for a boss, you have to be at work at a certain time and be there for a certain time frame. If it’s 9 to 5, that’s it. Many employers don’t like it when employees suddenly come up with emergencies and have to leave work early. My own personal experience with this was horrible. I had no life at all.
With freelancing, you work when you want. So, if heaven forbid something happens, or you have to run out to the store and pick up something, you can stop what you’re doing and go.
Want to take a vacation? No problem. You can do this on YOUR schedule and NOT the company’s schedule. You don’t have to ask permission for anything. You come and go as you please.
If you’ve never lived this kind of life before, you have no idea how wonderful it really is.
Almost No Expenses
People don’t realize this, but when you work a job outside of the house, I don’t care what kind of money you’re making, there are expenses that you’re going to have that you don’t have when you’re working at home.
For example, there is your travel expense. Unless you’ve designed a machine that can transmit molecules through space, you’re going to have some kind of travel expense. Either you will have the expenses associated with owning an automobile or the expenses associated with taking public transportation. Either way, they add up.
Have you looked at gas prices and public transportation costs? A one way trip over a well known bridge near where I live is $4 a pop. That’s $20 a week or $1,000 a year, provided you get 2 weeks vacation each year. I don’t even want to tell you what subways, busses and trains cost.
And then there are costs such as food. Eating at work is always more expensive than eating home, unless you’re going to brown bag it each day. And who wants the hassle of having to make a lunch each morning that has to be able to travel in a brown bag? I sure don’t.
Then there are other costs such as union dues for some jobs. There is healthcare, pension, and other things that you have to pay into.
My wife makes $100,000 a year as a teacher.
Know how much of that she actually brings home?
About $70,000. That’s because of all the stupid teachers dues and all the other crap she has to pay into.
It’s a joke.
With freelancing, your only required expense is your Internet connection. And there are ISPs that are as cheap as $10 a month.
That’s $120 a year to run your business.
Ability To Pick And Choose Your Assignments
This is what I personally love. When you work for a boss, you have to do whatever he wants you to do. If there is an assignment that is not so pleasant, that’s too bad. You either do it or you lose your job.
Let me tell you, there have been assignments that I’ve had working for bosses that were just plain awful. One of them took me until 1 AM to complete. I had been there from 9 AM that morning. That’s a 16 hour work day.
Trust me, I almost quit that day.
And then there is the pay that you get for your assignments at work. No matter how easy or hard it is, it’s the same pay. You’re either on salary or you’re an hourly employee.
With freelancing, you don’t have to take an assignment if you don’t want to.
Some prospective customers are going to have unrealistic expectations and are going to be quite demanding.
Know what I tell these people?
Have a nice life. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
This will happen just as much because of somebody with a bad attitude as it will for somebody who wants to pay me $2 for an article that’s worth $20. It just isn’t going to happen.
As a freelancer, you have all the power. You don’t have to cow tow to anybody. If an assignment doesn’t appeal to you, don’t take it.
Variety
Not all jobs are exciting. Some are the same thing day after day.
I had one job where all I did each day was enter data into a spreadsheet.
Can you say BORING?
I almost lost my mind there and eventually had to quit.
With freelancing, you will NEVER have this problem. You can work on writing articles one day and writing an ebook the next. You can tackle as many niches as you want.
A good writer, with good research skills, can write about anything. You can write a book on acne cures one day and Ipods the next. The only way you’ll ever get bored is if you let yourself get bored.
Trust me, there is NOTHING more exciting than freelancing.
Work From Anywhere
Most jobs will have you work from one location and that’s it. The same job I was telling you about, the spreadsheet one?…I sat in the same cubicle day after day after day looking at the same person in front of me and the same walls to the side of me.
I swear, I almost lost my mind.
When you freelance, you can work from anywhere, especially now that they have laptops with wireless Internet connections. Want to get out of the house one day? No problem. Take the laptop to the beech and hang out on the sand.
Trust me, it’s also a great way to get ideas.
The Money Is Better
Now I know there are some very good jobs out there. And I’m not talking about people who are professionals like lawyers, doctors, IT people and so on. I’m talking about your average run of the mill job. You’re not going to make a loot of money at your typical job.
With freelancing, you can’t even begin to imagine how much money you can make and in a very short period of time.
At one point, I was making $25 for 15 minutes of work. That comes out to $100 an hour.
Try making that at a Burger King.
And some people make even more than that. Some freelancers make about $15,000 for a 40 hour week. That comes out to about $400 an hour, more or less.
You are never going to make the kind of money you can make as a freelancer at a job.
Never.
So as you can see, there are a lot of advantages to freelancing.
However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a downside, and I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t make you aware of that downside.

I think you have generated some fair points in Features. By the way, I think we still have a lot of unknown things about this matter.
